You will now be able to IM via your XBox 360 according to this press release. There will even be a new attachment for your controller to enable this (pictured).

Man, you can be trash-talking via voice, and at the same time IM'ing someone to set up another game of poker. How sweet is that?

Yep, the 15 year old dude in Canada definitely rox! If this is a hoax, oh man, I can't imagine the backlash that will come.
